Well, it would not improve the performance of MDaemon itself, it will improve the performances of the system running MDaemon. For example, if you open Windows Explorer in a directory with 150'000 files it will look as hanged for seconds/minutes. Or if you want to copy or backup the content of a directory, and so on...
The user does not even know about the problem, and I cannot push customers to organize their email folders according to the system performances or the problems that they cause if they keep their inbox full of messages.
I hope I was explaining better the need which is at the base of the hint..

PS: of course this will also improve the MDaemon's performance. Consider that MD would read the content of different smaller folders in stead of reading the content of a single big folder. I know that the file data would finish in a single "memory array", but the reading operation would be much faster.
